Get a Tax Credit for the First-Time Homebuyer
A first-time home buyer tax credit program was available to homes purchased as your primary residence between April 2008 & May 2010. The federal program provided a tax credit for first-time home buyers equal to 10% of the home’s purchase price, up to $8,000.
The federal program was allowed to expire, so the first-time home buyer tax credit is unavailable. However, state-based programs for first-time home buyers can fill this void.
Although these programs and tax credits may vary depending on where you live, the definition of a “first-time home buyer” is the same. You are eligible if you have not owned a house in 3 years or you don’t own one in the past three years.
These are the statewide programs that apply to all 50 states. These programs are subject to change and may include additional county, city, or state programs. The HUD portal allows you to search for state information. This is a great way of ensuring that the programs you are researching are legal.
